When Kelly Slater called it a day with 1:25 left in heat 2, round 5, of the Quik NY Pro – leaving Jeremy Flores comboed and alone in foreign waters – respect probably wasn’t the first word that came to mind.
However, when Kelly hit the sand he didn’t claim it. He didn’t remind us that he was the worlds best. He didn’t spout off about the epic surf or the up coming semis. He touted Jamie Mitchell.
Slater wasn’t the only 10x world champ in the water and he knew it. (Mitchell was working as water patrol for the event.) The fact he took the time to share his spot light with a credible athlete who doesn’t get enough of that type of attention says a lot about the man. It says a lot about the champion.

We could go on and on about the delicate intricacies of making you a better surfer (and trust us, we undoubtedly will) but there’s a seldom-sung-yet-hugely-important side to surfing that’s far too overlooked: Paddling. If you want to surf better, you’ll need to start catching more waves. And if you want to catch more waves, you’ll need to become a stronger paddler. To get your arms churning at capacity, we rang up 10-time paddleboard champ Jamie Mitchell for some insight. (more…)

This is really about surfing.
Whether or not you follow traditional paddleboarding you have to respect it. I’ve never been a great surfer, diver or paddler for that matter, but I can appreciate what it takes to be good at such things. Traditional paddling is unique, especially in the Molokai Channel.
To be successful one has to be able to read the water like a top-40 surfer and be embodied with that Curren-esque quality that seemingly calls wave energy to him or her. You need endurance, the ability to not stop moving for hour after hour of paddling until you can’t paddle any longer and then paddle some more. Most importantly you need grit, (more…)

Watermans Jamie Mitchell nominated for adventurer of the year
Voting ends January 15, 2011
Orange County, CA, December 14, 2010 – World Champion Jamie Mitchell has been nominated as one of ten elite athletes and explorers considered worthy of the title, 2010 Adventurer of the Year. This year’s field includes ocean crossing rowers, extreme climbers, sailors, adventurers and even a famous tracker. However, only one will be crowned on January 15th.
Mitchell’s nomination rests on the strong shoulders responsible for his nine consecutive Molokai to Oahu victories. What sets him apart is his dedication and consistency to the endeavor and the inconstancy of the terrain. “Paddling is not like any other sport.” Says Watermans’ Pete Stirling, “You can show up to the same event year after year, but it will never be the same race… Everything changes, from the conditions to the competition, and a paddlers ability to deal with the unknown is his most important asset.” Mitchell’s unwavering performance represents unparallel ability to adapt.
Voting is already underway. Watermans Applied Science and the rest of Jamie’s sponsors encourage you to vote for Jamie. Individuals can vote daily.

AFTER nearly five negotiating the Pacific Ocean, paddleboard champion Jamie Mitchell is taking the rest of the year off.
He needs weeks for his cuts, scrapes and bruises to heal and months for his body to recover.
“My toes are sort of shredded, I’ve got skinned knees and my lower back is still aching,” Mitchell said after winning his ninth Molokai to Oahu island crossing in Hawaii yesterday.
“They are what hurts the most at the moment.” (more…)
