The Molokai, pre race rundown by Eric Abbott

The Kaiwi Channel, better known as the Molokai Channel, is home to the World Championship of paddleboarding, the Rainbow Sandals Molokai to Oahu, presented by Honolua Surf Co. The Molokai, as it is commonly known, covers 32-miles of open-ocean, navigating through one of the most dangerous waterways in the world. For many paddlers, the mere accomplishment of finishing the race is a victory in itself. However, for the growing handful of elite waterman and women, winning the Molokai is the pinnacle jewel in their racing crown. To many winning this event is comparable to winning the Super Bowl of football or the baseball World Series. This race pushes each paddler’s fitness level to the brink, as they leave the island of Molokai behind and begin the long journey to the finish line in Moanalua Bay, on the island of Oahu. (more…)

Words and photos by by Eric Abbott

As the anticipation for the 2009 Molokai to Oahu Paddleboard Race builds, the daily workouts are only intensifying. The Wailupe Boys took to the water this afternoon for a quick lactate interval workout. Mikey Cote, last years Stock Champion is moving quick this year in hopes of defending his Stock title. However, this years Stock class with be as competitive as ever with many top paddlers coming from California, Australia and Hawaii.  Mikey and I have grown up competing against each other since we were 12 years old, now at 22-years the level of competitive is greater then ever. Whether it is being the fastest on the water or playing ping-pong we pretty much go broke trying to win. (more…)

Wailupe Life with Eric Abbott: Willwilinui Ridge Hike

Words and Photos by Eric Abbott

Wiliwilinui Ridge Trail

The the surf was flat, and the paddling muscles too sore to endure another 25mph downwind run, so Nica and the chocolate lab Benny and I head to the Ko’olau Mountains for an afternoon hike along the Wiliwilinui Ride trail. It was smooth hiking until Benny came face to face with a 45 pound wild pig. Notorious for being aggressive, we were lucky that the pig ventured off our path and back into the bushes were it came from. As the afternoon progressed the clouds rolled in as well as the rain. Which caused the last mile to be extra difficult; making the already vertical trail muddy and slippery. Once atop the Ko’olau mountain range we were able to look down in Kaneohe Bay and Kailua on the Windward side of the Island. Tired, muddy and sore the Nica and I ventured back down the mountain to the car where we enjoyed some well deserved ice cold Primo’s.  Benny drank water!
