Here is a short story with photos, about the SUP race event I competed in this weekend.
————-
I just finished the Maui to Molokai event on Saturday April 24th, put on by the Maui Canoe and Kayak Club <http://www.mauicanoeandkayak.org/Homepage.html>. The race was really fun and all the people were super nice and helpful. In the event there were a total of 14 or 15 SUP soloist including Livio Menelau, Alan Cadiz, Thomas Maximus Shahinian, Campbell Farrell, Jack Dyson, Ann-Marie Richman, Donna Badome-Raaphorst – to name a few. And there was one SUP relay team Mark Raaphorst and Jeremy Riggs. The race was 27 miles long from Flemings Beach, Maui to Kaunakakai Harbor, Molokai. The race started at 8:30 and the conditions were favorable with moderate tradewinds. The winds at about 15-20 mph, were coming from the northeast which is excellent for this channel crossing. (more…)
I read something the other day on one of Laird’s many pages from a guy who was blasting SUP racer Rob Rojas over what it would take to earn his respect. Now I don’t SUP. I’m not afraid to do so and have on many occasions, but I’d much prefer to Short-board or paddle my 18′ unlimited paddleboard. Simply put it is a matter of personal preference. Now a kook is a kook; I won’t argue that, but in terms of respect I’m willing to give it up to our SUP brethren. Percentage wise, I’d have to guess that more people per-thousand that SUP rip it up than would a similar group of surfers; I live at Trestles… I’d know. However, this particular nay sayer had one specific quality that he challenged Rojas to man up too, an 8-foot barrel. How he came up with this qualifier I’m not sure. My guess is that an 8-foot head dip is about as far as his “35-years” of surfing had taken him. So these two photos are for you bro. Behold the Saeman brothers – two of SUP’s greatest young talents leaving the paddles on the boat and putting the boards in the pocket… I’d say this qualifies as around 8-feet. In terms of Rob, well he can take care of himself. Just ask either of the guy featured below.
